Who is responsible

Banana Skins is an independent project operated by Ciarán Paul Roche. Privacy requests can be sent to the email address below.

What Banana Skins collects

Banana Skins records whether an anonymous visitor voted that a daily joke did or did not make them laugh. If you choose an optional reason, it also records why you thought the joke worked or failed.

Votes are stored with the trial date, candidate and comic mechanism. They do not include your name, email address, contact list, message or the person you choose to contact.

What stays on your device

Your browser creates a random judge identifier and remembers which dates you voted on. This provides the judging streak and helps prevent duplicate daily votes. It is not an account and is not used for advertising or a personal profile.

Before storage, the site combines that random identifier with the trial date and converts it to a one-way hash. This lets the database reject another vote from the same browser that day without storing the browser identifier or linking votes across different dates.

What the infrastructure sees

Like ordinary websites, the hosting and security infrastructure may process connection information such as an IP address, browser details, requested page, timestamps and security signals to deliver and protect the site. Banana Skins does not use advertising trackers, sell personal information or follow visitors across other websites.

Optional analytics

Google Analytics is not downloaded and sends no Analytics data unless you choose “Allow analytics.” If allowed, it records page views and ordinary engagement information such as the page address and title, referring site, approximate location, and browser or device type. An Analytics identifier stored in your browser helps distinguish visits.

Advertising storage, Google signals and ad-personalisation signals stay disabled. Automatic site-search and form-interaction measurement are also disabled. Consent is the legal basis. You can decline without losing any site feature and can change or withdraw your choice using the “Privacy choices” button; withdrawal also removes accessible Google Analytics cookies from this site.

Google may process Analytics data in the United States and other countries under its data-processing terms and applicable transfer safeguards.

Sharing

The site can open your device’s own share menu or a service you choose, such as messaging, WhatsApp or email. Banana Skins does not request your contacts. Once you choose another service, that service handles the message under its own privacy terms.

Retention and your choices

Anonymous experiment votes may be kept as part of the public study and historical results. Routine hosting and security logs are kept under the provider’s operational and legal practices. You can clear the local judge identifier and streak through your browser. Because the stored daily hash is not connected to your name, the project generally cannot identify or retrieve a particular vote as yours.

The site is for a general audience and is not designed to collect children’s personal information. Please do not email passwords, payment details, government identifiers, health information or other sensitive personal information.
